Path and Dunbar

Heard on This Week In Tech podcast (no. 344) that users of Path are actually doing real social networking vs the likes of Facebook and G+ where it is more branding than socializing. Interestingly, Path’s 150 friends limit is related to the famous Dunbar number and there was an interesting research on the correlation between the size of brains of monkeys and the size of their tribes. Extrapolating that to humans, and we get the 120-150 dunbar number. All these theorize that human can only network or socialize optimally with 120 to 150 folks. Any thing more, the brain will “virtualize” them as a nebulous cloud of loosely defined engagements.
